ABOUT: Floodgate Farm uses biological farming methods. No-till and low till (minimal disturbance when planting) all with hand tools, no tillers or plows, keeping the ground covered with plants as much as possible, biodiversity in each garden bed.  We use some biochar which we make and inoculate first in a compost pile before adding it to a bed.

By having multiple crops in each bed, a stronger microbiome ensures the plants are nutrient dense.  We use cover crops and harvest some from them and from edible wild plants which makes our salad and wild chips a health giving powerhouse.  We use comfrey, horseradish, garlic and other companion plantings around fruit trees, mulch with wood chips and old hay, and top dress beds with compost where needed.  Any spraying we do is only foliar feeding rather than toxins, and is mostly done on the fruit trees.  We do add some slow release minerals when first establishing a bed.  Our strategy overall is to get the microbe-plant partnerships to feed the plants rather than soluble nutrients; in this way the plants get a wider array of nutrients which translates to crops that are more beneficial to consumers of them.
